Swimming & Education

A comprehensive aquatic education program will help prevent obesity, promote wellness, develop good personal fitness habits, and promote water safety and drowning prevention. An aquatic center will also support a premier aquatic education and competitive swimming program for Norman’s youth.

Norman’s aquatic center should include water fitness integrated into the Physical Education curriculum at all age levels through:

• Swimming lessons
• Strength, flexibility, and aerobic training
• A district wide learn-to-swim program for all second grade students

Water safety programs that teach:
• Swimming skills
• Respect for water hazards
• Accident prevention best practices
• Basic lifesaving skills

Water fitness and therapy programs for children with special needs that will address:
• Cognitive skills
• Fine motor skills
• Gross motor skills
• Sensory integration
